Happy Everybody Draw Muhhamed Day!
What a glorious day this is! For those of you who don’t know, it’s Everybody Draw Muhammed Day, a day dedicated to drawing the one entity we’re “not allowed” to draw.
If I can quote from the website I just linked,
We are not trying to slander the average muslim , it’s not a muslim/islam hatepage. We simply want to show the extremists that threaten to harm people because of their Mohammed depictions, that we’re not afraid of them. That they can’t take away our right to freedom of speech by trying to scare us to silence.
They put death threats out on Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of South Park, which forced Comedy Central to censor a really funny episode. Every time I watch it now I just get angry at the big black “Censored” box on the screen and the beeping out of the word “Muhhamed” (in some versions). I understand Comedy Central’s position on this, I’d prefer that they make a stand but I can understand that they have other priorities. It is, however, up to us as freedom loving US citizens to show extremists such as these that they can’t force us to conform to their beliefs under threat of terrorism. Maybe it’s just because I’m NOT crazy, but I never really get upset at comedy if it’s legitimately funny. I don’t know. Regardless, it’s your Allah-given duty to draw Muhhamed today. In honor of South Park, here’s the depiction I’m going with.
EDIT (1:42 AM, 5/21/10)
Just realized that we can still access the Everybody Draw Muhhammad Day Facebook group despite the fact that Facebook chickened out, just go to the Google cache link. It doesn’t provide the full functionality of the page but it gives you the basics. Enjoy!
